"Hi Cathrine I presume you are not using to cover a base but wanting to stiffen on its own to display lace look. I have never seen these used solely on their own as the open weave of crochet does not provide density to support strength. The word…"

Straw mat blocking

I bought some mats which are called paper mats. They are flat and woven in various colours. Although they are called paper they are actually a fine straw. I used 2 layers last night just to test how best to block them. I used water first to soak both layers, stretched and blocked on a wooden pillbox block.  I then brushed a stiffener all over and within the gaps and left to dry.  Although the shape has held well and I will add a brim wire, I feel I would like it stiffer. About Me
i fell into millinery by accident.
After developing a rare serious illness i lost my job... on my last £50 my Mum gave me another £50 & i bought cheap little handbags which i sold on ebay for a HUGE profit.. i did this for 2 years and changed to fashion, then i opened a ladies retail accessory shop & was visited by an agent for a well known wholesale millinery company. The price of the wholesale fascinators & headbands were just beyond my customer base so i designed some fascinators & took 2 years to develope a technique & skills to make the pieces.. set up an Ebay shop and sell around 3000 pieces a year across my shops online. My small workshop is at the back of my house & i have support from my Mum (who sews the pieces) and a lady who does my admin. Ive now been a milliner for 16 years
