Many years ago I made my own felt, last winter I made a cloche hat and scarf to wear to Melbourne. Recently, Due to the hot weather and heavy rains my studio was slightly flooded. [in the process of weather proofing it] Although 95% of my stock was rescued - i notice my felt cap and scarf are marked. with mould and dust. Do I wash it and re-block the hat in hope it will come clean and new again! Has anyone experienced similar. See More
growing up in the 50-60's in South East Queensland 'where's your hat or put your hat on before going outside." Dressing up in grandmas hats and sewing frills and flowers on big straw hats with mother.
I started my apprenticeship in design couture making bridal dresses with Deons Bridal Salon Brisbane when all of a sudden Deons was with out a milliner... at the age of 16, I was thrown into the job with little experience but caught on quick with a new head milliner from New Zealand taking me under her training skills. I owned my own floristry business in Emerald from 1974-77. Late 1977 a different direction took me into the field of a Telecom Technician, still working with wires and precision relay work before meeting my husband who was a wood and stone artisan from USA. from 1985- Helped him build his business and family, Eventually, built our own gallery, made bead jewellery and floristry until I opened a bed and breakfast in the beautiful rain forest of Maleny and worked full time.
2013, My husband was very ill and working the B&B 16 hrs a day on my own majority of the time, I realised at 60, I need to get back to my Creativity. After many years doing everything else and a year of deciding what to do as a creative artist and..now just returned after touring USA from Mexican border to the antique retro collectable shops of Sth Carolina to crazy New York and Las Vegas.
Dah! like duck to water..I asked myself. 'why not take up my old Art of bridal millinery." Sew the seeds of passion and here I am.
