“Once upon a time I was a Zara skirt” Have you discovered such unique resources in your local Thrift Shop? Caren Stevenson of Maleny, Queensland spotted this skirt in her local Op Shop and before one of her daughters could claim it she created this classic cocktail hat. It has such an old world feel topped off with a tailored satin bow. This piece is certainly a one off and the cheapest way to purchase such an exclusive piece of fabric. Caren has learnt all these tips through the Cocktail Hat class and she is combining Hat Academy lessons with dressmaking skills she is also studying on line. Hats off to you as you pursue your career in fashion!

The good thing about this skirt is that I actually have enough material in it for three more hats. I will definitely be making some bows and ruffles.to put on those from the fabulous silk Abaca lessons. I really love learning millinery techniques online as the nearest Tafe class is over 100 km away from me, it's on at night, and I'm in rural Queensland, so I wouldn't really feel safe driving to it alone! Thank goodness for online classes!

I am seriously thinking of entering this hat into my fashion competition, the focus being on a recycled design, so I think I will use the rest of the fabric on a matching dress! Sorry ladies, it does look like this will indeed be a one off hat after all!
