1940s-Style Wide Brim Felt Hat with Faux Birds

A few weeks ago I discovered the most fabulous 1940s novelty print dress in an antique store, but didn't have a hat to match it! I feel that one of the best parts about being a milliner is the ability to create a chapeau to match your outfit. Loving faux birds as much as I do, of course mine needed some birdies on it. I used my 1946 hat block that came out of the leftovers of a millinery student's kit from the Louis Miller School of Millinery. The hat is made out of a fuchsia wool felt hood with a burgundy grosgrain ribbon around the crown, and brown vintage veiling. The faux birds are made out of a wired buckram & spun cotton frame, and swoop around the sides of the hat. I wore it out for Sunday brunch last week and got SO many compliments! People especially enjoyed the vibrant colors.
