Hello All,

I recently purchased a new balsa wood utility hat block.  I would love to get some insight on the many uses for this block given this is all I have for now.  I noticed that the front is smooth while the back has an inward dip resembling the back of the head.

Thanks.

Hi K Can you add a pic but with curve near nape of neck may be a cloche block Once I see the pic will share what you can use it for Exciting you have made this start You will love Millinery as never ending creative fun E xx

Hi. . . . Thanks for responding.  I am truly ready to dig in and apply all that I've learned.  However, a bit concerned that I don't have the recommended dome crown block and brim to begin.  However, willing to work with what I have for now.  Here's a pic of the block which came with a stand and the headsize plate.  So far, I've fallen head over heels in love with millinery!  :-). Thanks for your instruction and the Hat Academy Platform.  Learning so much from all the instructors. . . . .Looking forward to sharing my creations soon.  K-

Hi K, Sorry I have taken so long to get back to you but have family member in hospital. Yes it is definitely a Cloche Hat block which hugs the head down to nape of neck and often has a turn up brim or a narrow brim at back wider at front. The dip is reflecting the base of the back of head above neck. It was the look of Roaring 20s - a fashion revival after WW!. You may be able to block a shallow dome crown before the shape dips but size of the block will need to be checked first and see if suits head size. With Balsa, which is more fragile than timber Block makers choose, avoid too many pins as it will weaken the grain- use elastic band or string to keep straw or felt in place when steaming Tip upside down for flat tip crown or pillbox if base is smooth The back may vere inwards but that's what bows are for :)  So glad you are adding to you knowledge through Hat Academy. Best Wishes, Elaine

Hi Elaine,

I am sorry to hear about your family member in hospital.  I will keep your family in my prayers.  Thanks for confirming the type of block and the various ways that I can begin to use it - at least I know I can get some use out of it until I can get another.  I checked and the area just above the dip in the back of the head measures at 23.5 inches (59.7 cm).  Yeah - so I'll just have to mark it!!   I misspoke as the wood is Basswood not Balsa so please confirm the pins will be ok.  Great idea to hide the dip in the back without trying to pad the dip area on the block out. .  . Thanks for all.  Best wishes to you and yours. . . .K-
