Hi Robin, I always use pre stiffened sinamay as all the effort to stiffen just takes so much time. Have been through the frustration of glued look and that is when I reverted to buy prestiffened sinamay which is actually cheaper than it was 15 yrs ago plus better quality. Lovely you have come back to blocking as Hats are on the way back -Elaine

Elaine- what about felt? Does that also come pre-stiffened or do you need stiffening for felt?

Thanks for info on un stiffened sinamay. Will experiment a bunch!  Bonnie

Hi Elaine,

while I generally use stiffened sinnamay, I have some really pretty unstiffened sinnamay that I would like to stiffen.  What ratio of Hel Erin/water do you suggest and do you dip it or paint the stiffener on?

Due to this question being asked so often I added a module to Lesson 1 to explain how to stiffener even if you have already blocked crown and brim. In lesson 19 on felt I have added tips for stiffening plus some extra tips on finishing edge + Check out your lessons - Elaine
