Any opinions on the best way of joining wire - I'm talking about steel wire using wire joiners. I simply cannot squash the joiner enough to hold the wire. what do others use to do this job, I wonder?

You have to make sure you have the proper size joiner for the wire you are using.  Also, after you squash, use clear nail polish over the joiner and a bit of the wire.  This helps to hold it and it also retards any potential rusting of the join.  If you are using brass joiners that might be the problem as they do not seem to hold as well for me.
