Regarding stiffining leather. I'm not a milliner, but when I use leather in a craft project? I spread a thin coat of Elmer's white glue on the under side and form what I want it to be. (It may also work to put several layers of Elmers after first coat dries.)
Elmer's dries clear and leather is VERY easy to stick. Try it with scraps first. My project was making cowboy hats for small dolls.
