Is there a way to keep the felt from caving in when you sew the hatband on. Maybe I didn't put enough stiffener on or the felt isn't that great but sometimes when I make a felt hat, trying to stitch…Continue

Felt bending

Is there a way to keep the felt from caving in when you sew the hatband on. Maybe I didn't put enough stiffener on or the felt isn't that great but sometimes when I make a felt hat, trying to stitch the hatband makes the felt dimple in.By the way. Want to share something I do when putting bands on in any hat. I cut a point on the underneath piece of ribbon/fabric so that when the other end of the fabric/ribbon laps over, it is much easier to not see the edges of the thing underneath. I have…See More

"You may want to reverse that recipe. Three parts stiffener and two parts water. I made a batch of stiffener using the above recipe and even after stiffening it twice the hat wasn't stiff enough to wire and trim."

Bias strip circles

"I don't know if I have found out something everybody already knows but I have discovered that a bias cut strip can be formed into a circle like grosgrain ribbon. The fabric is poly/satin (would probably work better with natural silk or cotton)…"

Has anyone discovered the upholstery (semicircle) needle for attaching brims and crowns. This needle works very well when you are using sinamay and are trying to connect your crowns and brims. I bought some needles a while back and  I never used this needle that was in the packet. Some memory told me that this needle was great for sewing at angles. I used the needle and it wor4ks wonders for attaching the two piecesSee More

Your Inspiration

Who was your inspiration to become a milliner??? In January of 2011, I was still shell shocked from being laid off from my job a month before. There was news footage of Prince William's "new fiancée" (now princess Kate)  christening a ship in a Naval Yard in Wales. She was wearing a feather pad  with a military crest pin. I saw that and thought " I can make that."Even though I still have not seen anybody else's hand made hats in person, the quality of my hats has steadily increased. If by some…See More

Welcome to Hat Academy Helen. I love the mad hatters FB site. As a full time milliner it reminds me there is nothing new and the hats of yesteryear are more amazing than todays Gaga styles!! I have perfected fabric covered pillboxes so look forward to teaching you some of these tips for the perfect finish. We have a friend here who breeds Cardigan corgis and she takes one of them to Aged Care respite centre every week as therapy for oldies who love it- they are such well natured dogs and smart. Best Wishes, ElaineM
