I remember my mother wearing a little black hat that wrapped across the top of her head.  For funerals she wore the veil down and for church, the veil was pushed up.  I loved that little black hat and couldn't wait till I was old enough to wear hats.  By the time I was old enough, no one was wearing hats where I lived.  :(  There weren't even any hat stores anymore.

My little straw boater with a pom pom on he crown. I had a little straw basket too. It was for Easter. I was about 6 years old. I remember how the elastic under my chin used to keep the hat on caused great annoyance !!
