The discipline of millinery has been a natural progression for me as a Embroidery graduate. Its innately sculptural qualities, draw a close parallel to my practice, which is underpinned by stitch techniques and fabric manipulation to create a three dimensional form.
I have always been fascinated with the fashion piece that adorns the face and neck because of its intimate association with character and personality. The dual purpose of the hat; to conceal or to attract attention, is a concept that intrigues me greatly.
My background in the discipline of embroidery, machine and hand-stitch, form the basis of my shape making and textile construction and achieving a sculptural quality within my work is a continual source of inspiration for me. I derive concepts from external sources to inform my practice - often I look to the forms found in industry and machinery and the shapes and lines in aviation. The theatrical and the ambiguous captivate me and I hope my work invokes the same excitement in the viewer.
