I created a hat for one of the many millinery contests currently going on. It's called "The Mating Dance" and the hat pictures two faux bird male egrets involved in an elaborate mating dance (competing for the right to mate with the unseen female). The hat was blocked on a vintage turban block, and is made up of a bright blue wool felt hood. Wrapped around the hat is a piece of ruffled, iridescent fabric, meant to represent the water flowing in a river. A little silvery fish charm swims in back of the hat, perhaps the fish is hiding from the birds (dancing always makes you work up an appetite, right??). The "egrets" are composed of wired buckram & spun cotton frames covered in white goose feathers, and their tail feathers are created using burnt/altered ostrich feathers.
