I love wearing hats and now in my retirement I am going to love teaching Millinery to pass on my skills to the next generation.
About Me
I have been happily married for 40+years and have 4 wonderful children. As a Teenager in the 1960s we wore hats everywhere. I made my first hat in 1964 during my training as a Home Economics Teacher. We were trained over 2 years in all fields of millinery so we could teach millinery in Adult Education with the Queensland Govt. I love spending time
caring for my Granddaughters,Scarlett & Lillian and going fishing.
Thanks for the welcome, cannot tell you how excited I am about joining. Unfortunately my training in Canada did not include millinery classes but I have recently taken an all day full week course taught by a known milliner in Toronto which in combination with previous experience and my absolute love of sewing should marry well with your classes. Let the fun begin!

Hi Elaine, thank you for the kind welcome, and Yes, I'm really delighted to have new inspiration from this great millineries, it makes me to improve my work here in Spain day by day. Congratulations for the web, we're in touch :)
Hi Elaine, Thanks for your lovely welcome email. I'm really delighted to have found this website and be a part of this group and I'm sure I'm going to learn loads!
Hi Elaine.
Hope things are well with you.
Just wondering if you are planning on doing any classes closer to home in the near future? Was just looking into your classes at Toowoomba, would be a great experience!
Thanks
Carla Hell
As I learn more about leather I will be happy to post more information and pictures. I have very little experience with leather or Millinery work so far. I have only really worked with vegetable tanned cow leather so far. I enjoy it allot because I can hand dye and shape it easily. Being in the USA I hadn't even thought of using Kangaroo leather. I will have to see what the pricing is compared to cow and pig leather.
Thank you for the positive feedback on my flaxscinators, its allways good to hear. I intend to view a fw of your videos when I can. I am looking forward to learning tips and skills from you.
I also hope to make myself useful and deserve every learning class. The hardest part will be finding the right instruments for work. But let's think positively and face problems when they really appear, right?
Thank you very much for your welcome. I am very lucky. She and her seamstresses taught me a great deal. I'm in the process of moving so you may not hear much from me until resettled, but I am looking forward to getting back to work soon!!
Thanks for welcoming me to Hat Academy. Great website for milliners to communicate and get ideas, as well as learn some new skills. glad you liked my profile pic. I actually made the hat I'm wearing.
Thank you Elaine for your lovely welcome to Hat Academy...I'm so happy to be a part of this wonderful millinery website you passionately created. I hope to learn more about finely tuning my art and sharing with other hat lovers out there. I know we are all grateful to you for giving us the opportunity to set our creative wings into graceful flight...that is a beautiful gift to our artistic souls...
Thank you so much for the warm welcome and all the helpful tips. I'm really impressed so far with all of the great resources and talented people here. I look forward to learning and sharing with you all!
Hi Elaine, Thank you very much. I'm so glad I found your site and I was thrilled to learn you are practically a neighbour. :) My memory does not serve me well in relation to the teachers at TAFE in 83/84. To be honest, I can only remember Gail (Patternmaking, I think) and of course the lovely Nerida (Head of Fashion). I must dig up my records as I am curious about that now. I look forward to a long and fruitful association with the Hat Academy. Thanks again, Elaine
That is fabulous news! I tried to enrol in a TAFE skillset which included veils and fascinators but unfortunately there hasn't been sufficient interest to start a class in the last 18 months. I've been making veils from what I learned through work experience but I would be really interested in your classes on veils, headpieces, cocktail hats etc. I'll look forward to those.
Thanks Elaine. That sounds most encouraging. I made a birdcage veil for a wedding last April. Lots of trial and error but I think the end result was good and the bride was happy. However, I really look forward to learning your methods. Yes, I will definitely stay in touch.
Saw you on MOE and thought it was a good idea to join. Funny you should say Pillbox constrtuction... Been tearing my hair out with buckram and fabric - and then it hit me, block the buckram (and not sew!!! Really) and then use the block as a pattern for the fabric. Does the job wonderfully and I now do not cringe when a pillbox order is placed. Looking forward to learning some new techniques on your site!!
I'ts lovely to find a resource like this as you are right I do live remotely and its hard to get regular training. I look forward to continuing my hat making journey through this site!
This is a very belated thank you for welcoming me to the academy! I have been busy with house renos and 'day job' commitments that I haven't been able to do much millinery lately. I bought a lesson tonight - so hopefully that will keep me busy for the next few weeks!! Looking forward to doing more with the site.
Thank you Elaine for welcoming email. It was so nice to recieve such a nice words form you. Very happy to be first polish milliner here:) Its a very fresh art in my country but I am trying to make it happen for me and put all my heart in it. I even opened a first polish millinery site called Expose Akcesoria:)
Elaine, terrific to receive your welcoming email......thrilled you liked my online supply shop for Milliners @ www.sunflowertouchsupply.com Best Wishes, Brenda
Thank you Elaine. I too live on the Sunshine Coast. Can't wait to get started with making some beautiful creations. I think the online classes are a fabulous idea, as there doesn't seem to be anything local in the way of classes. I have five daughters, four at home. I'm hoping to start this as a hobby and one day turn it into a family business!
Thanks Elaine for the warm welcome.I hope to start some lessons soon, and i will like you to inform me in details how to buy with direct deposit from the bank.Once again thank you Eniola
