Hello! I am interested in jijin hats, a kind of liturgical hat that was used in China. I'm trying to figure out what material would be used to give this hat its shape/its stiffness? I'd like to be able to recreate one, but I'm not sure what kind of leather/buckram/material would be needed, and if it would have to be glued to the inside of the fabric? I have a background in sewing, but not in millinery, so any information or advice you can give is appreciated! :)…

I’m repurposing a veil for a bride - using her mother’s headpiece. The veiling was quite discolored, and I was able to pull the color back to it’s original shade; however, now I’m having the most difficult time getting all the wrinkles out. I have steamed, ironed with protective cloth, ironed direct on low setting, soaked in hot water and hung using some weight to try and get to dry with less wrinkles and repeated again. It’s better, but still not ideal. Any suggestions you have will be…

Hi everyone.

Please share your wisdom for this newbie hat maker but long time felter for what vintage affordable Singer sewing machine might be best as a first machine for felt hat making. My modern machine has died on me (I think I killed it). I’m specifically comparing Singer 15-90, 15K-88, 99K, 66 and 221 featherweight machines. Or I may get a heavy machine for home use and eventually a featherweight for carting to craft fairs. Those are what seem available to me. Thank…

I came to the art of hat making late in the game. But I have been working hard to catch up! Does anyone have information about sites or stores that sell good patterns for sewing hats. I am especially interested in any Katrinka patterns. I understand they are no longer in production, but am hoping someone may have some they have tired of and may be willing to part with them. I make hats for my Themed photo shoots, mostly vintage style I would be grateful for any information.

Hello, I happen to be a hat LOVER first and a hat MAKER occasionally.

I have been enjoying HAT ACADEMY for a few months, and am wondering if instead of keeping your millinery stored... you might enjoy displaying your creations in your homes as ART OBJECTS on a lovely mannequin head.????

I am a vintage style mannequin head artist (view at www.crunkleton.com). I immagine a collection of one, two or three mannequin heads showing off a…

I am a vintage style mannequin head artist (view at www.crunkleton.com). I immagine a collection of one, two or three mannequin heads showing off a collection of lovely hats...right in your living room for friends and visitors to enjoy. I picture changing this display from time to time (back into storage) so your display of millinery stays fresh and always changing. Great conversation piece.

Think about it. I have planted the seed...now let it grow. Thanks much www.crunkleton.com they are lovely !

Hi,

I was wondering if any of you can help with this.

I was asked to do replicas and/or restore the old black berets for a university. Is there anywhere I can still get a Chenille yarn/braid similar to the one in the pictures? It has a diameter of 0.7 cm and a thin wire in its core. (Sorry for the poor quality of the photos! They looked better than they turned out)

I know the one that's used for crafting nowadays but this old one was of a better quality and sold by the metre, I suppose. Also, the new ones come only in pieces of 30cm or so -since I would need it in one piece, I can't use them anyways. I was thinking of using a velvet braid or something like that as a substitute but am not really happy with the thought... I would use the Chenille braids sold for crafting if there is no other option but I don't know where to get them in rolls or per metre. I tried all the sewing shops over here in Austria, also on Etsy and Dawanda, and internet research in general. Nothing suitable. Any ideas?

I'm very thankful for any suggestions or help.
