I chose to use elastic band as it is quickest for me but if the crown is being molded all in one with the brim and no band the elastic can leave a wide indentation. 

I choose then to use a cord as in this video. Using stringline for felts eliminates use of pins around edge if there is no width in binding. Unfortunately pins can leave indentations. A shot of steam and a scratch with pin can hide these but commercially manufacturers find what is quickest for them.
